Trang Imagineering: Clem 7 - North South Bypass Tunnel - Canopies

From 2008-2010 we worked closely with the Brisbane North South By-Pass Tunnel project, to develop the structural steel design for 3 major road canopies.

In collaboration with the architects and structural engineers, the first step was the design of the complex canopy surfaces. For the purposes of construction they needed to be defined by controlled tangent radii through the purlin access.

And this was just the start!

Trang Imagineering then worked interactively with the lead structural engineer to develop steel solutions that fitted within the surface design, yet supported the massive structures.
For this purpose our talented design team used 3D software.

Features of this outstanding project

The 3 canopies are 3-dimensionally and irregularly curved, to look like an ocean wave, or tree canopy
For the Central and South Canopies, circular arches are buttressed between different excavated rock faces, concrete pier walls and reinforced concrete columns and freeway slabs.
The largest North Canopy has triple span beams which are formed in a complex triple curve.
- These are supported on the rock faces and twin spider columns.
- These columns incorporate 2 reinforced concrete pedestals and 8 steel columns, creating 2 inverted pyramids.
All the canopies have large voids through the roof and at the edges.
The internal voids (‘pods’) are in filled with steel louvers.
- Some of these are shaped like flat plates, while others are folded Z-sections.
- This reduces direct sunlight intrusion near sensitive tolling equipment.
All louvers and their immediate support beams follow the 3-dimensional roof curves.
- To prevent flooding of roof stormwater onto the traffic below, soaker gutters are placed around each pod, which funnel into hidden downpipes.
There is little repetition over the entire project – pods are of varying shape, orientation and size. Because of the rolling wave shape of the canopy roof and ceiling surfaces, each pod is unique.
